Benefits of children’s climbing frames
Climbing frames don’t just let children play and have fun, but they also help them to develop a range of skills that are essential for every child’s development, including:
- Gross motor movement – Using their arms and legs to move up climbing walls and swing across monkey bars, children can improve their balance, hand-eye coordination and agility.
- Social and emotional coping skills – By encouraging cooperation, communication and turn-taking, climbing frames can help children develop essential social skills and emotional coping mechanisms. Facing challenges on the frame builds resilience and confidence, teaching kids to manage frustration and solve problems, which enhances their ability to handle an array of emotions.
- Physical development – Climbing facilitates healthy body processes that can help promote overall wellness and physical development. Just some of the advantages of climbing include increased cardiovascular flow, improved flexibility, improved strength and enhanced coordination.

Climbing Frame FAQs
- Wood type – Some types of wood last longer than others, so the longevity of your climbing frame largely depends on the type of wood it’s made from.
- Pressure treatment – Pressure-treated timber lasts up to four times longer than untreated alternatives.
- Maintenance – The better you take care of your wooden climbing frame, the longer it’ll last.
- Check and tighten – You should check all nuts, bolts, and screws regularly (at least twice a month during peak usage season) to make sure that they’re properly in place, and tighten them if needed. Take care not to overtighten, though, as this can cause the wood to crack.
- Treat the timber – To protect the timber from moisture and harsh UV rays, you should apply a wood preservative or sealant every 12-18 months. An oil-based treatment will typically last longer than a water-based sealant, providing greater protection.
- Clean regularly – Cleaning is especially important if you want to keep your wooden climbing frame in good condition. Using a mild cleaning detergent, remove mould, mildew, and other debris like leaves to keep your climbing frame in the best condition and ensure it’s safe for children to use.
- Inspect for wear and tear – Keep an eye out for splinters, rust, and any other signs of deterioration so that you can replace worn-down or damaged parts as soon as possible.
